The parish encompasses open countryside, woodland, agricultural land and a stretch of spectacular coastline, a section of the long distance walking trail The Cleveland Way. The ancient church of St Oswald’s in Lythe is a landmark visible for miles and there is a chapel of ease, St Mary’s in the lovely setting of The Valley, Sandsend. Mulgrave Castle at Lythe, is the home of the Marquis of Normanby and the Mulgrave Estate is the major property stakeholder within the local area. The coastal and country villages reflect the popularity of the area as a holiday destination, providing such amenities as holiday cottages, bed & breakfasts, cafes, pubs, restaurants and shops. In addition to these thriving businesses the life of the local community depends on such resources as the school, village hall and sports facilities in Lythe, and the medical practice in Sandsend. |
